Notes on the History of the Coptic Church from the council of Chalcedon to the independent states under the caliphate

These are the typed lecture notes that Anba Youannis, Bishop of Gharbiya, prepared for the Clerical College in 1979 (1695 of the Martyrs) on the history of the Coptic Church after the council of Chalcedon.

They run from the division that followed Chalcedon in 451, through the Henoticon, Justinian, monotheletism and the persecution under Cyrus the Muqawqis, the Persian occupation of Egypt (617-627) and the Arab conquest, to the Church under the Muslim governors (641-868): the Islamic law on the dhimmis, the jizya, dress and the building of churches, the burdens and revolts of the Copts, the ordeal of the Coptic language, and the patriarchs, saints, monks and writers of the period. The notes announce two further parts (the independent states from 868 to 1517, and Ottoman Egypt), which are not in this typescript; the same material, carried to 1798, was later printed as the second part of his History of the Coptic Church after Chalcedon.

The text was transcribed from the scan of the typescript on the diocese’s site and checked against it page by page, keeping the typescript’s own spelling. The typed page numbers stand in the text.
